You hold me nowMonday, June 15, 2009Hillsong United has just released a new album - Across the Earth - Tear Down the Walls. Would encourage you to get it, there are quite a few new songs, and the lyrics are very meaningful, they are really touching. Although many of the songs have heavy use of the electric guitar, can still play some of the songs on the acoustic. One of my favourite songs - You hold me now. 3 beat song, best is to let you read the lyrics...You Hold Me Now Indeed, He holds us now. Hope this song will encourage you throughout the week, even as exams draw near. Have a blessed week ahead! posted by Joel Tong at 9:47 PM

Complete trustWednesday, May 13, 2009Hi, it's been a really long time since I wrote something. Past few days have been feeling kind of sick.. Will only be back in school on Monday. My keyboard is down, so now I am attempting to write with a tablet. Sigh... today was in school for SPA. I was really concerned about feeling really groggy before the exam owing to being sick -- maybe something even worse, considering last night's sleep did not go very well. But I came across a passage -- Matt. 8 -- last night that reminded me of God's goodness as our Healer during my QT:Jesus Heals Many14When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. 16When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: And, referencing to Isaiah 53:4-5 -- 4 Surely he took up our infirmities 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, The passages gave me great encouragement, especially the one in Matthew 8 of the Roman Centurion's complete faith in trusting God to heal him. ( v. 8-9) And that was what I decided to do, though the odds were really stacked against me. And thank God that today, during Physics SPA, I managed to maintain a clear mind instead of feeling groggy, and it went quite well. =) Thank you for praying for me =) I hope that my testimony will continue to encourage you in your daily walk with Christ. Whatever the circumstance, be the Roman centurion, have faith, and put your complete trust in Him! Matt 8:8 - The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. posted by Joel Tong at 5:38 PM

Sieve of EratosthenesMonday, March 9, 2009Was having some spare time today. Coded a basic prime number generator using the sieve of E. Works quite fast, managed to generate the first 1m primes in under 2 seconds while writing to output. Thought it might be helpful to post the code online, so here goes:#include #include #include using namespace std; int main() { int max = 1000000; ofstream bla("out.txt"); vector for (int i = 2; i < max; i++) { while(e[i]) { bla << i << " "; for (int a = i; a < max; a += i) e[a] = 0; } } bla << endl; bla.close(); return 0; } Enjoy! =D I just generated a list of numbers and eliminated the non-primes from there. Do not even think of coveting. Ever.Wednesday, February 4, 2009I was reading the 10 commandments the other day from Genesis 20. Here's the NIV version from Biblegateway.com:Exodus 20 The Ten Commandments 1 And God spoke all these words: 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me. 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 13 "You shall not murder. 14 "You shall not commit adultery. 15 "You shall not steal. 16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." As I was reading it, what struck me was v. 17. We should not covet anything, and I remember a sermon last year about it. What exactly is coveting? I did not know the real meaning of the word a few years back, but coupled with the sermon and from past experiences, it has dawned upon me what it means to covet. To covet is defined by godonthe.net as “A strong desire for something that does not belong to you.” Simply put, Craving something that others have and you do not have / do not have the means to get. i.e., not content with what you have. In a single word: greed. It was really until I read the sermon did it really strike me how dangerous coveting can be. Coveting can appear in subtle forms, and that is what makes it dangerous because you will not be unaware of it. It can cause you to sin even further. For example, you are bent out for your friend’s bag. So you find means and ways to get it, including stealing. Or perhaps, in a much more subtle way, causing havoc in someone else’s life / backstabbing him just because he is better than you. All these can stem from covetousness. As I consider these examples, it then made sense to me why seven instances were mentioned about it in v. 17. (1) House, (2) wife, (3) manservant, (4) maidservant, (5) ox, (6) donkey, (7) everything. In a way, mentioning not to covet in different ways seven times. In Hebrew culture, we can probably interpret this as added stressing of the importance of not coveting, and perhaps bringing to mind the subtle temptations of coveting. It’s like saying, do not covet. Ever. Don’t even think of it. In light of this passage, it is perhaps good for us to reexamine our lives. Are we perhaps coveting something that others have? Maybe envious of a relationship, or just wishing for wealth that belongs to your friend? Have we become bitter through coveting? Or distant from Him because of this? Perhaps it is best to open up our hearts to Jesus to search us for any covetousness, or anything that hinders our relationship with Him. Dear God, help me not to covet. Help me to love others, no matter how bad they can be, and no matter what they have. Help me to be content with what I have. You know that I will always fall short of Your glory, no matter how many times I make that promise to You. But guide me Lord, so that others may see Your glory one day. Amen. posted by Joel Tong at 10:40 PM
